In the year 1094, Emperor Theodosius I of the Roman Empire, who ruled over both the Western and Eastern Roman Empires of Greece, sought assistance from Pope Urban II.
Turkish forces had invaded and seized the eastern provinces of the Greek Empire and were advancing toward Constantinople, the capital of the Roman Empire.
The Pope called upon the knights of Western Europe to set aside their divisions and minor conflicts in order to aid the Greeks in the East. He urged them to unite and take part in a holy war, marching toward Jerusalem.
The First Crusade was about to begin.
