Qin Shi Huang: The Warring States of China

Qin Shi Huang was born as Zhao Zheng, the eldest son of Prince Yiren of the Qin state. At the age of 13, Zhao Zheng became the king of the Qin state in the northwestern part of China. In 221 BC, his army defeated the other six rival states, and King Zheng proclaimed himself as Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of a unified China.

As emperor, he initiated reforms aimed at centralizing power and reducing feudalism, which had caused instability in previous periods. He set standards for weights, measurements, and currency, which led to the creation of an extensive network of roads and canals to facilitate trade across regions. He also built fortifications to defend against barbarian invasions, which eventually connected to form the Great Wall of China.

One of his most significant achievements was standardizing local scripts into one unified writing system used across China. In 210 BC, while touring Eastern China, Qin Shi Huang became ill and died, though the exact cause of his death remains unknown. He was buried in a massive tomb that took over 700,000 workers and 38 years to complete. Part of the tomb includes the world-famous Terracotta Army, consisting of over 8,000 life-sized soldiers, chariots, and horses made from terracotta to represent the Qin army.
